Motorola Droid, Samsung Galaxy S Create Massive Spikes In Activations

According to this article, around 300,000 Android devices are activated daily across the globe. Consumers in the US, Europe, and East Asia account for most activations. Now that Google’s Android OS has led other mobile OS developers in market share for months now, it’s obvious that, at 300,000+ activations daily across the globe, the other developers have a lot of catching up to do.

Watch this video for a geographical representation of Android activations from early 2009 to the present:

Activations clearly spike upon the releases of the Motorola Droid (October-November 2009) and the Samsung Galaxy S phones (June 2010). This is no surprise, as the Motorola Droid set off Android’s popularity in the US marketplace, and Samsung’s Galaxy S series was a well-designed platform tailored to the capabilities of wireless carriers across the globe.

The video also demonstrates the power of a few well-implemented ideas: 1) Google’s idea to create an open OS for use by all cell phone manufacturers; 2) Motorola’s success in designing the Motorola Droid to be a phone capable of competing against the iPhone, rather than a phone that simply emulated the iPhone; 3) Verizon’s success in marketing its Droid line as a viable alternative to customers in the US.

The evolution of Android has been fun to observe. 2011 promises a new wave of Android devices in direct competition with Apple’s iPad—so will there be a similar video for Android tablet activations a year from now?

David Pogue, technology guru for the New York Times, has listed his nine best technology ideas this year.

The Motorola Droid Dock and Car Mount were one of those ideas:

The Motorola Droid, of course, is an app phone (that is, an iPhone wannabe with a black rectangular touch screen, etc.). It’s generally a very good one, with slide-out keyboard, excellent speed and the Verizon network.

The winner here isn’t the phone, though — it’s the docks. One $30 plastic dock suctions to your windshield. When you slip the phone into it, hidden magnetic sensors automatically fill the Droid’s screen with Google’s new GPS navigation software, complete with turn-by-turn driving directions, spoken street names, color coding to indicate traffic, map icons (for parking and so on), satellite view and more.

Or buy the $30 home dock. When you insert the Droid, the screen becomes a handsome, horizontal-layout alarm-clock/weather display, complete with buttons that let you access your music or even dim the screen for sleepy time. You have to charge your phone overnight anyway, so why shouldn’t it be doing something useful in the meantime?

Source: NYTimes.com

As someone who also appreciates efficiency in everything, I like Pogue’s comment about the Droid actually performing some function while it charges overnight.

Anyway, Amazon.com carries both the Droid Multimedia Docking Station and Motorola’s OEM Window Mount.

The Novatel MiFi was also included on David Pogue’s best of ’09 list. Anyone looking for a wireless internet connection and WiFi router in one small box should check out BuyMiFi.com for more details and deals!

The recent jailbreaking of the Motorola Droid has unlocked many possibilities for programmers to take advantage of the powerful phone.

When the Droid was first jailbroken, only a week ago, there was speculation that multitouch would be one of the first new features to be released for the Droid.

And just a week later, it looks like multitouch is confirmed. One programmer has migrated the Motorola Milestone‘s (the UK Droid, with multitouch) firmware to an American Droid. The final release may be two to three weeks away.

The Android operating system running on the Motorola Droid, originally Android 2.0 at launch, is being updated to Android 2.0.1 on handsets as I write this.

Among the few complaints users have about the Droid, one of the most common was that the Droid’s camera was not functioning well. Autofocus wasn’t working well and the camera was just plain slow. These camera issues look to have been taken care of with Android 2.0.1.

There have been some other aesthetic changes made to Android. The lock screen is new, the widgets look polished, and the font displaying the time in the top-left corner of the screen is changed.

Voice reception is also improved. Next to improvements made to the camera, this is probably the best part of the update to Android 2.0.1.

Bluetooth functionality, a glitchy GPS, and battery life are all improved. There are myriad other improvements as well.

If you’d like to read the full list of improvements, head over to PCWorld.

Also, for anyone thinking of picking up a Droid or other new phone, you might think of doing this before midnight. Verizon is offering FREE ACTIVATION ($35-$135 savings) on new phones. For the best deals on the Droid go to either Amazon or Wirefly.
